Newsletter from the President of Local 500

A Glance back…

Incredible really, another year has flown past and we are chock-a-block FULL to the brim with all that occurs at this time of year.

Rather than slowing down now, the pace has doubled really: the volume of calls and the number of meetings have increased. The steward body is routinely involved in Return to Work meetings, discipline meetings, Health and Safety meetings and individual and group meetings with our members daily.

This is of course on top of all of the other initiatives within CAMH the Union is involved with.

The year has been inspirational as well as disappointing, with Health and Safety as a focal point.

We made positive gains where the Health and Safety of our members is concerned. The Union now sits at a Workplace Violence Committee table chaired by the CEO Catherine Zahn.

We are all working as a team, both Union and Management, to move the agenda forward and ensure we have a safe and healthy workplace.

Be assured your OPSEU Health and Safety team at all sites is knowledgeable, skilled and trained to deal with your issues should you find yourself in an unsafe position.

We held an ALL staff BBQ this past summer for the first time since the old Government days and it was so successful, people at ARF were lined up down the hallway, people were laughing and chatting, and folks told me it was like the old ARF, of a decade ago. It was nice to hear.

At Queen Street we served hundreds of people in what seemed like a line from the BBQ of Unit 4 extending all the way back to the maintenance building. It sure was fun.

Health and Safety initiatives have of course uncovered some serious concerns regarding safety at CAMH.

We are seeing evidence of increased horizontal violence taking place. Issues between employees are beginning to hit the SCORE reports–racial tensions, people threatening each other, speaking to each other in inappropriate ways, behaving in an unprofessional manner toward each other; and now employees documenting the issues, via SCORE reports.

Sadly, this speaks to the culture which has taken over CAMH.

I struggle daily to understand how we got here, who is responsible, what are we going to do? Our mental health is in jeopardy, at an organization where we are expected to provide top-notch mental health services. I have no real answers but for those who know me, you know I am not sitting idly by simply wondering. I have spoken about the issues, to HR, to the CEO, to many of you in our most recent general membership meeting…it is very unsettling. We, as the Union are meeting with the broader “leadership” of CAMH on December 20 to discuss some of what has been and is taking place.

I can tell you because I am an old bird that at one point we cared about each other. We deeply cared about our practice, our work, our clients and we always asked if anyone else needed a hand. It mattered. We liked each other. Yes, those days are gone.

This however has been encouraged, and nurtured and planned. Managers seem to be unaware of their role today, as much as the doctors appear to not know their role, as much as employees we are not certain who is giving the orders, and what our role is. And then we have Human Resources supporting managers carte blanche, as if they were the Union for management.

There are a number of us working together trying to shift this culture, and we all know there are a few working hard to ensure that does not happen.

We will get better–we can see it from where we sit, from what we hear and read and know. We need you more than ever as members and employees: we need you to help us shift the culture also. We have been seen on programs recently asking all of you to help. Please fill out the surveys, please participate and have a voice, only from your own experiences can CAMH learn, and act accordingly. Choose to learn your Collective Agreement, so you have knowledge and are aware of your rights in the workplace. Speak up.

We are coming home, great timing! Local 500 is coming back to CAMH next week. Unit 1 Basement is our new digs, the corner office to the left of the elevator. Watch for our new information on how to reach us shortly.

2018 is rapidly approaching, go ahead-glance back… now look ahead and look around, you have time to make change. Become involved, stand up for each other, stand up for your work.

May all of you find a peaceful space…a few days off and a well-deserved rest!

See you next year!

Nancy

News from the region 5 ‘We Own It’ team

On Tuesday, October 24th, there will be launch of a major campaign to ‘Keep Transit Public’. A lot of our members take transit to work and the cost of transit has been on the rise.  With the P3’s that Metrolinx is planning, the cost will only go further up as private corporations make profits.  Join us in the morning between 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. at 65 Front St. W., Toronto.

On Wednesday, October 25h, join us to support our members at the Colleges.  The College Faculty will be having a rally at 11:00 a.m.  at 900 Bay St, (Bay & Wellesley).  Key issues in the strike are the fight for fairness, equal pay and job security for contract faculty, more full-time faculty positions, a legitimate voice for students, faculty and staff in how our colleges are run, and higher quality education for 500,000 college students across Ontario. Supporting these actions is important in raising the bar for all OPSEU locals, and a great way to engage local activists and give them a taste of mass picketing and supporting a major province-wide strike.

On Monday, November 6th, there is a We Own It rally & info picket against the Annual P3 Conference of the Canadian Council for Public–Private Partnerships from 12 noon at the southwest corner of Nathan Phillips Square.  Please organise a group from your local and bring flags and your spirit to this event.

OPSEU College Faculty Strike Update

OPSEU College Faculty Stand Up for Quality Education, Fairness & Good Jobs

Despite 3 months at the bargaining table and a strong strike vote, 12,000 OPSEU professors, instructors, librarians and counsellors have been forced on strike for fairness, good jobs and quality education in at Ontario’s 24 Community Colleges.

The goal? To achieve a fair contract that addresses the damage to quality education done by years of government underfunding and the massive expansion of low-wage, part-time and contract teaching positions.

Key OPSEU demands include: i) Fairness and equal pay for contract faculty to create job security and improve the student experience. ii) A minimum 50:50 ratio of full-time to non-full-time faculty to maintain stability and improve quality iii) Academic freedom and a legitimate voice for faculty and students in the way our colleges are governed.

OPSEU Strike Countdown: Community College Faculty Strike Deadline Set for 12:01 a.m. Monday

OPSEU College Faculty Stand Up for Quality Education, Fairness & Good Jobs

Despite 3 months at the bargaining table and a strong strike vote, 12,000 OPSEU faculty at Ontario’s 24 Community Colleges have had to set a strike deadline of one minute past midnight tonight (12:01 a.m. Monday).

If the College Employer’s Council continues to reject these proposals, OPSEU members will be mounting picket lines at college campuses in Region 5 and across Ontario.

Fall lobby day at Queen’s Park

October 16 & 17, 2017 — *NEW DATES CONFIRMED!

A note from Ed Arvelin, Sector 18 Chair:

Due to a scheduled break week at the Ontario Legislature, we have moved the dates for the MHD’s fall lobby day at Queen’s Park. Lobby events will now take place one week later, on Monday October 16, and Tuesday October 17.

On October 16, participants are expected to attend an evening lobby training session at the Chelsea Hotel, in downtown Toronto. Participants will then spend the entire day at Queen’s Park on October 17, visiting with their MPPs and demanding action to improve workplace health and safety.

The dates are now confirmed and finalized, and your registration packages will be sent out by next week – so be sure to stay tuned!

OPSEU central will be covering the costs for two representatives from each bargaining unit to attend (highest ranking/local president), however, the lobby day is open to all members interested in attending.

If you have any questions, I can be reached at 807-628-9187.

In Solidarity,
Ed Arvelin, Chair
OPSEU Mental Health Division

Welcome Back!

Welcome back everyone, we hope everyone enjoyed their summer.  Although summer isn’t over quite yet, it’s time to start looking forward to some upcoming events, and to plan the way for the Greater Toronto Area Council as we work our way up to the election in June 2018.

While most of our large contracts either having been negotiated like the OPS and LBED or currently being negotiated like College Academic, College Support Staff and Corrections…there will still be lots of work to be done over the next year.  We look forward to working with you and hope you will join us on the journey over the next year.

Women Won’t Wait

On May 19, 2017, the North York Women’s Shelter (NYWS) closed its doors and laid off 32 women from OPSEU Local 518 who worked as domestic violence counsellors and support staff, assisting women and children trying to rebuild their lives after fleeing domestic violence.

Women and children fleeing domestic violence in Ontario already can’t always get the help they need.  Yet in North York, we’ve just added to the problem of not being able to get help.  While the reason for closing is the rebuilding of a new shelter.  That new shelter will take approx. 2 years to build, leaving women and children without aid in their time of need.

This is not acceptable. Every community in this country needs violence-against-women services. And North York, with a population of over 670,000 people, is no exception.

Please ‘Learn More’ and sign the petition to urge the Minster of Community and Social Services to reinstate violence-against-women services and jobs in North York.

Members of Local 518 are asking that you take the time to sign the petition at: http://www.change.org/p/bring-violence-against-women-services-back-to-north-york
